Neodymium magnet is a magnet made from elements like iron, boron and neodymium. Neodymium magnet is a rare earth magnet and was firstly developed in the year 1982 by General Motors. Production of this Neodymium magnet involves two processes named rapid solidification and classical process. Now, let’s see both the process involved in the production of a neodymium magnet in detail.
Powder metallurgy or a sintered magnet process is used in the classical process of the production of neodymium magnets. In the classical process, the elements like boron, iron and neodymium are melted and are casted in the form of ingots. These ingots will turn into fine powder of particles once they are melted down. A process known as liquid-phase sintering will be applied to these fine particles, and it is this particular process that will make these particles align magnetically. Once they are magnetically aligned, these particles will undergo constant heating and compression to from magnets.
Rapid solidification involved in the production of Neodymium magnet is completely different and is done by making an alloy of Nd-Fe-B. Then, a thin ribbon of the same is taken and melt spun. These thin ribbons will contain grains that are randomly oriented. This ribbon will then undergo the process of pulverization to turn them into small and tiny particles. These particles will be added with polymers and the resulting mixture will then be molded to magnets.
Every year almost 50,000 to 55,500 tons of neodymium magnets are produced, and these magnets are mainly employed in loudspeakers, hard drives, MRI machines and also in other areas. Because of the high magnetic power offered by the neodymium magnet, special care is to be taken while handling it. China is the country that is famous in the production of neodymium magnets and it contributes to 75-80% of the world production. Europe is little lower in the production and constitutes only 3-5% of annual production.
